Mississippi Fishing License Info | Reel Crappie Guides with Bruce Thornton
Before heading out on the water with Guide Bruce Thornton and the crew at Reel Crappie Guides, make sure you’ve got the right fishing license in hand. It’s a quick step that helps support wildlife conservation across Mississippi—and it keeps your trip legal and hassle-free.
Whether you're a returning guest or booking your first adventure, this page covers everything you need to know about getting your Mississippi fishing license before your trip.
Do You Need a License?
Yes. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) requires most anglers age 16 and up to carry a valid fishing license when fishing in public waters—including the lakes we guide on. Mississippi offers both resident and non-resident licenses depending on your home address.
There are a few exceptions (like fishing on private ponds), but if you’re booking a guided crappie trip with us, you’ll need one. And don’t worry—it’s a quick process.
What Type of License Do You Need?
If you’re fishing with Reel Crappie Guides, you’ll need a Mississippi Freshwater Fishing License.
Here’s what most guests typically choose:
- Non-Resident 3-Day Freshwater License – Ideal for visitors fishing with us for a short trip.
- Resident Freshwater License (Annual or 3-Day) – For Mississippi locals.
Note: You do NOT need a saltwater license for our crappie trips—just freshwater coverage.
How to Get Your Mississippi Fishing License
You can purchase your license online, in person, or by phone. It only takes a few minutes and you can do it on your phone if needed.
1. Buy Online (Fastest Option)
Go to the official MDWFP website: https://www.mdwfp.com/license
Create an account or log in, choose the license type, pay with a credit/debit card, and download your license. Easy.
2. Buy In Person
Licenses are available at most sporting goods stores, bait shops, Walmart, and select gas stations. Ask for a Mississippi freshwater license.
3. Order by Phone
Call 1-800-5GO-HUNT (1-800-546-4868) to purchase by phone. Have your ID and payment info ready.
What to Bring
Make sure to bring a digital or printed copy of your license on the day of your trip. You can save it on your phone or take a screenshot. Mississippi conservation officers may check for licenses while we’re on the water, and we want everything to go smoothly.
